The Letter ~ Part I

As she parked her car along the usual slot, Shruti could hear her phone ringing from inside her purse.
“That must be Ravi...”
Her husband had flown to Bangalore the previous day to attend a meeting and hadn’t telephoned yet. She was asked not to call on his cell till 7 in the evening. And he had promised he would call her once the meeting got over.
It was dark already and her sleek black mobile phone had apparently hidden itself under the piles of papers and sundry she usually stuffed her bag with.
“Damn…”
After a few more seconds, the ring tone died down and all she could hear was the humming of the car engine.
She knew he’ll try again. Probably after a few minutes. He would know she missed the call searching frantically for the phone inside her bag. That was how it always had been. Shruti smiled to herself.
She got out of the car grabbing the bag of grocery she had picked up on her way back. As she walked towards her home, she eyes fell on the letter box hanging on the wall right next to the door. It was there on that wall ever since they had shifted to their independent villa in Punjabi Bagh. Seven years, two kids and two dogs after their marriage, the wooden box had shriveled and given up on the moist laden Augusts of Delhi. This would perhaps be the last monsoon it would witness.
It was then that something caught her attention. She could see the corner of a paper from the gap which was left for letter to be put into. Perhaps as invitation, or some notice… or just an ad. showcasing a sale in some random store. She would never be interested. Forget it. Nevertheless, she walked towards the letter box and opened the small window and took it out.
It was a letter. From the stamp she could make out it travelled over seas to reach her. On the cover was written in cursive writing…
To,
Shruti Vishwanath
C-9/3, Shanker Villa
North Extension
Punjai Bagh
New Delhi
Shruti frowned. Who would send a her letter in the age of E mails? She flipped it and read what was written at its back.
I found you, Queeni….. with a familiar inverted curve under the phrase and two dots under that. Her heart missed a beat as she blinked in disbelief. “Emily!!!!”
She almost shrieked. After eleven years, Emily had ultimately found her Queenie.. as she lovingly called her.
To be continued...

I left my mind wander and it never came back...

For quite some time now, life has been a roller coaster ride. And when I say I dint have time for anything, I mean no time for anything remotely associated with living. Suddenly work comes swarming from nowhere and mercilessly hauls away, me, my time with myself, my family, my books, my blog, and my friends… all in a bunch. And when I finally find some time to breathe, I find them all lying in a careless heap in some corner of my mind. And as I haplessly rummage through the mess, I curse myself for letting myself live such a petty, forgetful life. Dates, plans, pending tasks, numbers, names….belongings ‘safely parked’ under the newspaper or beneath the bed sheet...

A careless life... when your Ma is speaking to you about some pending tax work and half your brain is wondering whether you had linked the correct cell on that demand model you were working on the whole day and also whether the RFP was submitted on time for the second module of your previous project. You end up doing none. Welcome to the Horridly Disappointing Multi Taskers Club.

And in this brouhaha, you find everything so mixed up that you end up missing some very crucial details of your life. The result being violently oscillating states of mind. There would be times you would cringe with fear, your eyes tightly shut, fists clenched bloodless and heart crying out for a warm hug from Ma. And at times you would want to float around anonymously in a blissful island of blogs with not a soul to question your thoughts.

Suddenly, you are pulled along by the current with no choice but to hold on to your dear life, your folks, belongings and memories in the hope that if you get lost in the mad rush, you at least have something that makes you want to get up the next morning and live for yet another day.

Yeah, I know. Life has to go on and one has to let go and move on. One should prioritise. BLAH. My brain has grown algae on it listening to these unsolicited philosophical rantings. Hello! At least it should not be like getting so lost in a mechanical rhythm that you hop around like a clockwork monkey despite having lost the zeal or the energy to even say, "I think you are fat."

But then there are happy days. When you get some time off for a bout of latitudinal liberation... and walk back into the office the next day... sunny side up... Heh.
